Chile’s state-owned copper company, Codelco, has reported that the two subcontracted workers who had been missing following a snow avalanche—which occurred this past weekend at the open-pit section of the El Teniente Division mine—have been found dead. Their bodies were discovered during search and rescue operations carried out by emergency teams in the area.
The company also stated that, despite the efforts of rescue teams and operations conducted at the site, the deaths of both workers were confirmed. This official announcement was made after the subcontractor, San Lorenzo, notified the victims’ families, in accordance with established protocols for such emergencies.
The workers were employed by San Lorenzo, a company providing services to the contractor Aura, and were performing inspection tasks in various sectors of the open-pit mine. Operations in that area had been suspended due to adverse weather conditions.
