The Government of Ontario is investing new capital in mineral exploration, committing $10 million to support 68 projects through the Ontario Junior Exploration Program (OJEP). The latest round marks the sixth intake of the program and focuses on helping prospectors and junior companies advance early-stage work across the province.

Funding is designed to offset some of the financial risk associated with seeking new deposits. Exploration at this stage is uncertain, expensive, and often takes place in remote regions, making it difficult for smaller players to secure private backing.

    Funding Designed for Early-Stage Risk

Under the program, eligible projects can receive up to half of their exploration and development costs. Individual prospectors may access up to $50,000 per project, while junior mining companies can receive up to $200,000.

The province has used this model in previous funding rounds, committing a total of $30 million to more than 200 companies. A large part of those efforts has focused on minerals considered essential for modern technologies and energy systems.

    Economic Return and Investment

Previous exploration funding has delivered strong economic returns for the province, with past spending generating more than twice the initial investment.

In the last year, Ontario has climbed from the 15th jurisdiction globally for attracting mining investment to second, only behind the US state of Nevada, and now leads all Canadian provinces and territories, ahead of Saskatchewan.

    Support Beyond Discovery

While early exploration funding is widely welcomed, projects often face a significant funding gap after initial discoveries. Advancing a project through permitting, technical studies, and early development often requires tens of millions of dollars, a level of risk many investors are reluctant to take on.

Bridging that gap will likely require a more coordinated approach that goes beyond early exploration, with faster regulatory processes needed to help projects move forward.

    Infrastructure and Job Growth

Ontario is also looking at broader measures to support mining development, including expanding electricity capacity in northern regions through new transmission lines and additional hydropower.

Looking ahead, demand for workers is expected to rise in the province. Stephen Lecce, Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Mining, says the Ring of Fire region alone could create 70,000 jobs in the coming years to support mining growth.

With global demand for materials such as nickel and platinum group elements increasing, Ontario is positioning exploration as a starting point for longer-term development across its resource sector.
