Mining mineral coal in Mucangadzi, Zumbo district, in the north of the central Mozambican province of Tete, will be re-launched starting next year, said the district administrator, Djone Manhoso.

The administrator also told daily Newspaper Notícias, that a group of businesspeople from Brazil and India had visited Mucangadzi in the first half of the year for meetings with the district government, community leaders and the population.

At the meetings, the investors made a general presentation of the objectives of the re-launch of coal mining in Mucangadzi, at a standstill since the 1980s due to the 1976-1992 civil war.

The newspaper also reported that coal production in Tete province fell by 21.9% in the first half of 2019, to 4.743 million tonnes, compared with 6.070 million tonnes in the same period of 2018.

The provincial director of Mineral Resources and Energy, Grácio Cune, told the newspaper that the drop was the result of the standstill of one of the fronts of Vale Moçambique and excessive rainfall in the first six months of 2019.
