Investors need to take a rifle approach to decision making: consultant

With US midterms around the corner, almost daily investment announcements and conflicts around the globe, investors need to be watching every move before deciding what to put their money in, CEO of Feneck Consulting Group John Feneck, says.

“There’s so many things to watch right now as an investor that we’ve just said, ‘Hey don’t buy your ETFs. Don’t buy funds. You need to use a rifle approach here to buy things you have high conviction in,’” Feneck told MINING.COM host Devan Murugan on the latest Top of Mine episode.

Feneck said investors need to be at the top of their game when it comes to knowing how all these events are influencing the markets today, even suggesting they make notes on their calendars, planners and anywhere to be aware of what’s to come.

Once investors have a grasp of what is happening in the world, deciding where to invest comes down to picking the right projects with the right people, according to Feneck.

“We look for people first, then jurisdiction, good drill results and experience,” he said. “That’s super important to me as an investor because the project can be great, but if bad people are part of that project, it may never get off the ground.”

    Waiting for the silver drop

Feneck said he is ‘disciplined enough’ to wait for silver prices to drop to $50 to then show interest in the metal again.

“I’ve watched silver for 26 years. It’s my biggest position,” he said. “It’s a volatile metal and you have to respect and support its resistance levels.”

“I don’t mind doing that and we defend that position with everyone because we want to make clients money.  The name of the game is making money, and you have to sell to make money,” Feneck added.

Feneck said he believes that the backdrop ‘has never been better’ for silver and gold, as long as ‘finite situations’ are solved.

“It’s just a matter of getting the Fed out of the way, getting the war out of the way, and getting the elections out of the way,” he said. “So I really believe that you have to look at the longer picture as an investor.”
