In line with its commitment to operational excellence, Antamina has expanded its fleet of ultraclass Caterpillar 798 trucks to a total of 45 units.
The mining company purchased 27 of these trucks from Ferreyros, adding to the 18 already operating at the site, in the Áncash region at an altitude of 4,300 m above sea level.
To support production goals, the CAT 798 trucks stand out for their 400 ton (363 t) hauling capacity as well as their high availability and speed, Ferreyros says. They also feature a variable power system that boosts productivity and fuel efficiency, along with a long engine service life – attributes that help reduce the cost per tonne.

In terms of technology, the CAT 798 model is capable of autonomous operation using Caterpillar’s MineStar Command solution. It is also future-ready, being compatible with Caterpillar’s Dynamic Energy Transfer system, which will contribute to the mining industry’s decarbonisation goals, Ferreyros says.
To maximise the availability and efficiency of this extensive fleet, Ferreyros provides 24/7 support at the mining operation. This support includes specialised services, on-site spare parts warehouses and the comprehensive backing of its national network of workshops, laboratories and monitoring centres, the company says.
Antamina is one of Peru’s largest producers of copper and zinc concentrates and ranks among the 10 largest mines in the world by production volume.
Back in 2024, Peru’s National Environmental Certification Service for Sustainable Investments (SENACE) approved, after a detailed evaluation process, the Modification of the Environmental Impact Study (MEIA) of Antamina. This approval allows for an investment of approximately $2 billion over the next few years, following Antamina’s internal governance process, which will allow the company to extend its operations from 2028 to 2036.
